Agricultural commodity markets were rocked on Friday by a yield stunner in the USDA’s October WASDE and Crop Production reports. Defying average trade expectations for yield cuts, the USDA delivered a massive surprise for corn supplies by raising national average yields, sending grain prices sinking across the board. Oilseeds and wheat saw closer-to-expected adjustments, but broader market spillover and ongoing Midwest harvest momentum dominated trade. Meanwhile, livestock markets balanced cheaper feed inputs against shifting packer margins and cash fed cattle trade.

**Corn:** Corn took a heavy punch from the USDA report. In a massive surprise to pre-report trade models expecting a yield trim toward 177.7 bpa, the USDA bumped national average corn yields up by 2.7 bushels to **181.2 bu/acre**. Total U.S. corn production was raised to 16.034 billion bushels, while 2026/27 ending stocks surged by 282 million bushels to **1.849 billion bushels**. In response, corn futures plummeted following the release, with December corn sinking to test multi-week lows closing at $4.80 ½ /bu.

**Soybeans:** Soybean data came in much closer to trade expectations. USDA modestly increased national soybean yield estimates to **53.1 bu/acre** (up from 52.8 bpa in September), nudging U.S. ending stocks up 5 million bushels to **315 million bushels**. While domestic crush demand held firm at 2.78 billion bushels and export commitments were lifted by 10 million bushels, heavy spillover pressure from corn’s post-report sell-off dragged November soybeans lower to settle at $12.92 ¼ /bu.

**Wheat:** U.S. wheat balance sheets saw a slight supply increase. USDA raised 2026/27 U.S. wheat ending stocks by 23 million bushels to **740 million bushels** on higher production (1.534 billion bu) and slightly lower exports. Globally, USDA trimmed Russian export estimates to 40.0 MMT. Despite tighter world export availability, wheat futures were dragged lower in sympathy with the broader grain complex, with Chicago December wheat settling at $6.70 ¾ /bu and KC closing at $7.19 ¼ /bu.

**Cotton:** ICE cotton futures saw modest reactions to the WASDE report despite USDA raising domestic production forecasts by 2%. Market attention remains focused on hurricane and wind risks across Southeastern growing regions, with December cotton closing at 80.45 cents/lb.

The cattle complex navigated two-sided trade as feedlots weighed collapsing corn input costs against packer slaughter pace adjustments.

**Live Cattle:** Futures found underlying support as lower feed costs post-WASDE helped offset weaker midweek boxed beef cutouts. Physical cash fed cattle trade held steady. Structural calf tightness continues to provide a long-term bid for deferred contracts, with December live cattle closing Friday at $227.05.

**Feeder Cattle:** Feeder cattle contracts drew direct strength from the sharp sell-off in corn futures. With corn feed costs dropping roughly 30 cents on the session, feeder futures rallied Friday afternoon, with November feeders closing at $341.95.

### **Official USDA October 9 WASDE Summary**

- **Corn Yield:** **181.2 bu/acre** (vs. 178.5 in Sept; trade expected ~177.7).
- **Corn Production:** **16.034 billion bushels**; **Ending Stocks:** **1.849 billion bushels**.
- **Soybean Yield:** **53.1 bu/acre**; **Ending Stocks:** **315 million bushels**.
- **Wheat Ending Stocks:** **740 million bushels** (vs. 717M in Sept).

Macro markets saw energy fluctuations and corporate earnings announcements heading into the weekend.

**Crude Oil:** Energy markets continue to digest supply-side tightening after China announced a temporary halt on refined fuel product exports, offsetting broader macroeconomic demand concerns. Ongoing logistics friction and elevated regional diesel premiums ($6.00/gal) continue to keep energy transportation costs elevated for Midwest harvest and freight corridors. Crude closed near 92/barrel

**S&P 500:** Equities traded with a steady-to-firm bias, closing the week near 7860 as Wall Street officially kicked off Q3 corporate earnings season. Major banking institutions delivered solid early earnings beats, helping absorb ongoing headwinds from volatile Treasury bond markets. Despite Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent’s expanded buyback operations, 10-year Treasury yields remained pegged near the 5% threshold, keeping borrowing costs elevated across commercial lending channels and limiting aggressive upside breakouts for broader market indexes.
